08.12.2020

Xinaps is happy to announce an integration between its cloud-based model checker, Verifi3D, and Autodesk BIM 360®, a leading construction management software, to drive more productivity in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.

Offered as a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution, Verifi3D allows users to classify their building data, visualize it in the Verifi3D Viewer, check it against international, local or project-specific rules and regulations, and export issue reports in different formats, such as BCF. Its integration with BIM 360 allows users to log in to Verifi3D with their Autodesk credentials to easily and instantly access their Revit ® or .IFC format models  saved in BIM 360.

Additionally, Xinaps and Autodesk  customers can now load their models from BIM 360 into the Verifi3D Viewer, perform checks and validations and create issue reports. These reports will then be saved automatically to the user’s BIM 360 project, enabling customers  to further centralize their communication and, reduce miscommunications that can lead to mistakes and schedule overruns.

“Collaboration and coordination between teams is key,” says Frank Schuyer, CEO of Xinaps. “We believe that early model checking is crucial for an efficient and cost-effective building process. With Verifi3D, we are addressing this need, as well as the industry’s call for more cloud-based solutions and real-time model checking. By integrating with BIM 360, we have the opportunity to bring all necessary information in one place, facilitate Common Data Environments and improve professionals’ workflow.”

“Navigating international, local and project specific building rules and regulations can present a significant challenge when cross checking models,” says James Cook, head of integrations at Autodesk Construction Solutions. “With this integration, Verifi3D and BIM 360 users can streamline the process of checking their models against rules and regulations, helping improve their workflows while also mitigating risks and potential project delays.” Xinaps plans additional integrations in the near future to further help VDC professionals check their models real-time.

AEC Magazine Review: Verifi3D

AEC Magazine Review: Verifi3D

in News, Verifi3D /by Xinaps Team Account

This Monday AEC Magazine, one of the best known and respected media outlets in the industry, published a review about Verifi3D and its model checking capabilities in the cloud.

The complete article is available at: https://aecmag.com/software-mainmenu-32/2111-verifi3d-model-checking-in-the-cloud

Here are some quotes from the piece:

One of the key benefits of Verifi3D is speed. With a modern cloud infrastructure it certainly shows up older desktop products like Navisworks. File opening, upload from the desktop and filtering can provide substantial benefits in time saved. In some cases customers have said they saved literally hours on some projects.

The article outlines some of the key benefits of using Verifi3D:

Xinaps has done a good job of persistence of filter and rule sets, throughout all project work, saving time and effort when checking future projects.

This review is a big recognition for Verifi3D and the Xinaps team and proves that the path Verifi3D has taken is the right one.

A huge “Thank you!” to AEC magazine and Martyn Day for the review!

The role of data validation software in the Construction Industry (CI)

What is BIM (Building Information Modelling)?

Reform

The AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) has been the recipient of numerous reform agendas. These reform agendas have been led by, among others, the UK government and within the construction industry have focused upon inefficiencies in the delivery of timely and accurate information throughout contractual phases. As long ago as 1965, Frank Duffy, a president of the RIBA, proposed the concept of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) whereby clients would be visited by their architects 2 -3 years after initial occupancy to better understand performance issues of the building. These reports ran in parallel to the ‘Design methods’ movement whereby multidisciplinary teams (including sociologists) proposed that building design could be made more structured and systematic to mitigate the risks associated with the provision of incomplete design information.

The message from these and subsequent reports have remained the same; the information required to design, operate and maintain buildings needs to be better managed to ensure better quality. The provision of improved quality design information which places an emphasis on the whole life cycle of the building and the usability of the facility by client and users can help to reduce energy usage and the cost of maintaining the built asset. In short, better quality information equals better returns on investment and more sustainable buildings.

Summary: Verifi3D recognize that data validation is a vital part of the BIM process. Verifi3D proposes an easy to use, web based platform to allow experts and novices the opportunities to check their data.

BIM

BIM (Building Information Modelling) should not been seen as a complex technological concept, rather as an activity which involves more effective construction processes augmented by technology and effective collaboration of the individuals involved. BIM implementation is the provision of new processes and technologies within construction projects.

Europe is now home to the greatest concentration of government led BIM programs in the World . Governments are demanding better returns on CI expenditure, increased productivity, all built in a more sustainable manner with an emphasis on better quality. A paper by Haltulla et al. (2015) highlighted the barriers and benefits associated with BIM in the construction Industry (CI). The benefits for designers and contractors were seen as ;

1.       Internationally compatible process models;

2.       Emphasized role of the designer and improved design accuracy;

3.       Reduced defects and improved efficiency;

4.       Improved building automation and

5.       Better management of construction processes.

In contrast the barriers, as highlighted from 10 focus groups conducted with diverse professionals within the CI, were identified as;

·         ICT-related barriers;

·         Change resistance-related barriers;

·         Interoperability or similar problems;

·         Organizational and common process-based barriers and

·         Training and knowledge-based barriers.

We can conclude that BIM alone is not enough to solve the issues associated with data quality in the CI. The fear of the unknown; resistance to change; difficulties in exchanging information between proprietary formats; lack of time to implement viable approaches has subverted the potential of BIM.

Summary: Verifi3D has identified the importance of providing a software solution which is fit for purpose. Change is difficult but particularly in the construction industry. We prioritize the needs of our users to ensure our approach is focusing on our customer’s needs. We focus on maximizing the value proposition of our product by understanding the needs of our customers and their workflows. Verifi3D simplifies things.

ISO 19650 1&2

BIM (building information modelling) requirements for construction projects in the EU have recently been standardized (2019) in the ISO 19650 – 1 and 2 documents. These documents are based upon work undertaken in the UK for the preparation of the PAS 1192 documents outlining the requirements for BIM level 2 compliance (a level of detail provided within 3D models used on construction projects). These standards highlight a new interrelationship between project, asset and organizational information management in ISO standards. These standards emphasized the importance of providing quality information at the design phase of projects. Through these documents BIM has been formally acknowledged as a vital ingredient in the realization of sustainable built assets within the EU. Tasks associated with project stages are given structure to assist those preparing information deliverables on construction projects.  The ISO documents give structure to how the data is checked and validated by the lead appointed party within these processes.

Summary: Verifi3D recognize the need for a  simple data validation software. We understand that the process needed for the validation of the data is complex but must be made accessible to all project participants. Project Information requirements (PIR’s) outline the BIM deliverables on projects. These information requirements are constantly fed into Project Information Repositories ( also known as Common Data Environments) where the information is checked (usually by a lead appointed party) to ensure it conforms with the project requirements. Task appointed parties are those charged with providing information to be validated by the lead appointed parties. The advantage of Verifi3D is that it can be used by all project participants and is flexible and robust enough to be used in different workflows.

Better Quality Information

Interoperability, processes and collaboration are explicit focuses of the EU approach to BIM standardization. Common standards are the focus for improved performance, efficiencies and competition within the EU. Sustainability converges with BIM through facilitating better environmental performance through improved decision making. It is predicted that BIM can predict and inform decisions regarding carbon footprints, material choices, waste, operations and maintenance, documentation of environmental impact and Post Operation Evaluation (POE). The ISO 19650 proposes a structure upon which the EU AEC industry can base its data validation processes to ensure more sustainable and accurate data outputs.

Summary: Verifi3D becomes a vital tool for the classification, validation  and reporting of information deliverables on construction projects. At each stage of construction projects Verifi3D ensures quality information is delivered to optimize the construction process and prevent unnecessary expenditure on mistakes and rework. This is achieved with a robust, flexible and easy to use, cloud based data validation solution.

Xinaps and BIMcollab integrate issue management and model checking in the cloud with the BIMcollab-Verifi3D link

in BIM, News, Press release, Verifi3D /by Xinaps Team Account

For immediate release

10/10/2020, Delft, the Netherlands – BIMcollab and Xinaps announce a groundbreaking integration in one of the least digitalized parts of late design and pre-construction stage. The newly introduced interworking between Xinaps’ model checker, Verifi3D, and BIMcollab’s issue management software, brings to the AEC industry a seamless, comprehensive workflow within the model checking process.

The issue management system in the cloud operates across applications, empowering project collaboration. BIMcollab is designed to manage issues during the design and construction phases where BIM is used. Verifi3D empowers designers and general contractors with the right tools to validate their BIM data, automate hard clashing checks and mitigate risks during the model checking process real-time. Bringing these two workflows together helps bridging the differences between BIM tools and targets the multidisciplinary cooperation between companies working on construction projects. Now, issues found with the Verifi3D Model Checker can be published to BIMcollab real-time. The BIM modeler will be automatically notified and can immediately locate the problematic objects in their BIM Model whatever the authoring tool (Revit, ArchiCAD, etc). Once a solution is found, a simple click allows the issues to be reported and resolved.

We’re excited to announce a new integration that makes the model coordination and the issue tracking process easier and more efficient for everyone. By using the integrated processes of BIMcollab and Verifi3D, all project stakeholders from the field to the office can participate in issue tracking and resolution throughout the project life cycle. Model coordination may now become a full-team effort, providing accessibility to team members who have little or no experience with data validation software and processes. This provides value to our clients, allowing them to easily harness the power of their models and communicate the project design, check model development, and resolve issues quickly and easily. By bringing together BIMcollab’s issue management abilities and Verifi3D’s data validation and model coordination features, we are providing the best of both products.

Frank Schuyer, CEO of Xinaps

Combining the cloud-based structure of Verifi3D and the powerful BIMcollab workflows users already know and love results in a time-saving, seamless integration. Interworking between Verifi3D and BIMcollab allows project teams to save time by automating clash detection, increase the quality of their models by early data validation and create a single source of truth for issue management across the entire project team.

In order to stimulate BIM collaboration, it’s our vision to integrate BIMcollab with as many solutions as possible. That’s why we offer open source API’s, which are now successfully used by Xinnaps to build an easy to use integration between BIMcollab and Verify3D. We are very happy to welcome Verify3D users in our eco system.

Introduction

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is proposed as the solution for all building professionals, project management teams, project owners, construction companies, in order to better design, construct and operate and maintain buildings. BIM represents the digitization of the construction industry. All data during the design, building, management and maintenance phases are recorded in Digital Twins, with all construction partners cooperating. BIM proposes that the creation of a Digital Twin, for the purposes of improving project outcomes, can result  in a more economical and sustainable construction industry (CI).

Xinaps has identified that ensuring the quality of construction data is critically important to the data validation process and the production of Digital Twins for construction projects. Verifi3D is proposed as a data validation solution which allows this process to be seamlessly integrated with existing data workflows. Unlike competitors, Verifi3D is browser based & works off an SaaS licensing platform allowing greater accessibility and flexibility to its users. At the core of Verifi3D’s approach are the proprietary Autodesk rvt format and the IFC (Industry foundation classes) exchange format.  These file formats are the primary means by which Verifi3D conducts its data validation processes.

IFC general overview

Why did IFC come into being?

IFC format came in to being in 1994 in order to support integrated application development – or what is now known as interoperability. Since 2005 the IFC format has been developed and maintained, as an industry-led, vendor neutral schema, by buildingSMART . The IFC schema came into being to encourage better communication between participants in the construction industry through the design, planning and execution phases of construction projects.

IFC schema relationships

IFC is a standardized, digital description of the built environment which focuses on constructed and civil infrastructure. IFC is seen as the key ingredient in  open BIM. OpenBIM faciltates the collaboration process in the CI. Through OpenBIM Information can be easily shared between project participants. IFC is an exchange format which facilitates data transactions in the CI. The IFC schema specification can describe how a facility or installation is used, how it is constructed, and how it is operated. IFC is an information exchange format designed to faciltate improved collaboration in the CI.

This is why Verifi3D prioritizes the support of the IFC schema. Verifi3D is regularly in contact with industry experts who specialize in the classification of construction information within this format. This is a highly technical area in which Verifi3D endeavor to ensure that the information provided for the purposes of data validation is accurately parsed into the Verifi3D environment.

Revit general overview

Why did RVT come into being?

Proprietary file formats are those specific to their authoring software  and other permitted software. A RVT file is a proprietary Revit file [11]. Revit is at the forefront of the BIM movement and the most dominant file format in the US market for construction purposes[12].

RVT schema relationships

Besides native Revit file formats, the Revit software also supports common computer-aided design (CAD) formats as well, such as DGN, SAT, DXF, DWF, and others. In addition to modeling and designing buildings, rvt file format can also be used to analyze its meta-data for analysis, clash coordination, and other tasks.

Verifi3D prioritises the support of rvt formats because of their importance to our users groups. Much of the information produced internally (in-house) by these user groups is authored in rvt format and often the information delivery specification (IDS) for their projects stipulate that the information should be authored in rvt. This means that much of the supply chain produces its information in this format. Therefore, it is vitally important that Verifi3D  can quickly  import and validate this information in an accurate way.

Approach of V3D

Verifi3D approach

Verifi3D has developed an efficient approach which allows users to identify bottlenecks in their existing workflows. Revit files can be brought directly into Verifi3D through our Revit Plugin and saved as a V3D file along with user settings. IFC files are brought into Verifi3D through an IFC engine which is also used by major AEC software providers such as Trimble (Sketch-Up). We also offer sync with BIM360 which means your workflow can be seamlessly integrated with your CDE. Models can then be checked and validated within the Verifi3D environment and issues can be reported in BIM Collab/ BIM 360 issues/ BIM Track.

Verifi3D provides a direct link between the source information and the program to facilitate improved efficiency for user workflows.V3D pushes the envelope on the trade-off between precise and complete information vs. workable file sizes and efficient workflow

What advantages did Verifi3D bring to Hazenberg Bouw?

What advantages did Verifi3D bring to Hazenberg Bouw?

in Case study, Verifi3D/by

A TBI pilot study

You can also download this case study in a PDF format here.

The problem

The AEC landscape faces a myriad of challenges as the complexity of their projects increases. Global trends like population growth, urbanization and the transition towards Smart Cities are just a few examples of the main contributing factors. As a consequence, construction projects require several working phases, ever-growing amount of data and a wide diversity of competencies and skills, often leading to inaccuracies and miscalculations, costly and time-consuming rework. In the last couple of decades, we are witnessing an increase in the digitalization amongst AEC professionals, more specifically, the adoption of BIM (Building Information Modeling). While innovation has simplified a lot of operations, large-size  projects  still  suffer  from  slow communication and complex collaboration processes. Other difficulties are making large design dataset available and updated along the entire working cycle.

The importance of innovation

Innovation is key to overcoming these challenges, especially when triggered by the leaders in the industry. TBI is a major holding company in the engineering and construction industry located in the Netherlands, whose goal is to develop, renew and maintain the physical living environment in a sustainable way. Thanks to its strong group of companies and long experience, TBI is able to perform several types of assignments, from small initiatives to complex, high-profile projects, becoming a reference point for private and public clients. TBI is also one of the corporate partners of  YES!Delft,  the  leading  Tech Incubator in Europe, which Xinaps joined in 2016.

Digital enabler

TBI SSC-ICT is one the daughter companies of TBI that support corporate innovation and has been proactively engaged in the in the innovation process of Xinaps. As a front runner of digitization in the building and construction industry, they have seen the potential benefits of Xinaps for several TBI-companies. When Xinaps asked for a pilot, they have been the valuable connector between Xinaps and Hazenberg Bouw. Important for establishing digital transformation within the TBI holding company. Hazenberg Bouw, embraces the innovators mindset, becoming one of Verifi3D’s first adopters.

The solution

Although there are numerous tools out there performing model checks and data validation, designing an ‘easy-to-use’ integrated solution for different  VDC  professionals  is  complex. One of the all-rounded tools, launched in September  2019,  is  Verifi3D  by Xinaps. Verifi3D  is a cloud-based SaaS (Software-as-a-Service), which allows classifying building design data, conducting automated checks in compliance with regulations and reporting issues realtime. All in one platform. The solution’s cloud-based structure facilitates the communication between project members in a Common Data Environment  (CDE),  while  the  automated processes unload the operator from the time consuming task of manually validating the design  and  its  consistency.  Verifi3D  further helps professionals stay compliant with global, local  and  project-specific  requirements, as well as with ISO 19650 standards. Valuable  experiences  with  Verifi3D  have been shared by TBI (Techniek, Bouw en Infra).

The results

Hazenberg Bouw is an engineering, construction  and  infrastructure  firm,  which benefits of a wide portfolio of competencies: from apartments and houses to roads, bridges and more, Hazenberg is capable of satisfying the most complex customers’ request. Verifi3D  showed  its  benefits  since  the  very early stage of use. Thanks to its intuitive user interface and simple menu configuration, the operators managed to comfortably use the tool  just  after  a  few  clicks.  Verifi3D’s  main advantage is its user-friendliness: Verifi3D does not require long training hours or extensive previous software knowledge. The Hazenberg team  was  pleased  to  see  a  significant  cut  of hours that otherwise would have been spent on training. Difficulties  in  data  processing  and  format integration are a common challenge when importing large datasets into an on-premise design software. Processing design models could become a cumbersome and time costly operation, especially if users don’t have considerable computational power available.

Verifi3D showing filtering and object properties

The power of the cloud was one of the main advantages for Hazenberg Bouw – when using Verifi3D, there is no need to possess the ultimate hardware because Verifi3D runs the models on cloud. Moreover, the team showed a positive response towards the ability to export their own models directly from Revit and to work directly on the source file. Hazenberg mentioned that Verifi3D’s third-party integration with Autodesk BIM 360 and Revit and IFC support facilitated their collaboration with other teams and within the company. Sharing a model has never been so easy! Considering the cloud structure, the Hazenberg Bouw team mentioned that Verifi3D is capable of bringing their workflow to a next level:

When working in a large company, it is hard to
communicate and access the latest version of a model
real-time. Often that requires many professionals
to be physically present in the same room. The cloud
structure of Verifi3D overcomes these obsolete patterns
and brings the working flow to a different level.
And we haven’t even unlocked its full potential yet.

Edwin van Kleij, BIM Coordinator at Hazenberg Bouw

Surely, this characteristic improves productivity and efficiency with 40-50% even in the early stages of its use and makes the design process more consistent, since every team member can always access the latest version of a model from anywhere and anytime. Due to the growing project complexity (and related amount of data), the process of manually configuring every object and setting up the checks without automation, surely is neither simple nor time efficient. The Hazenberg team was impressed by the model checking capabilities offered by Verifi3D. The automation allowed them to customize their rule sets and to apply them to every object they want to check. Accuracy and time efficiency were the designated KPIs through which the team evaluated Verifi3D features. Their satisfaction surely says a lot about the software performance against their expectations. The unique technological implications provided by Verifi3D have demonstrated promising capabilities to boost Hazenberg Bouw and other business units to reach their goals, while overcoming the industry challenges outlined at the beginning of this article.

Checking properties of linked models in Verifi3D

Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) is the integration of multidisciplinary working methodologies that optimizes and accelerates the evolution of the AEC industry. Its main aspects feature the Product (building, infrastructures, etc.), the Organization (involvement of all parties) and the Process (workflow of the design). The added value is enhanced collaboration among the parties, reduction of construction lead time by 10% and a reduction of contingency costs up to 50%.

To further help the digitalization and the modernization of the industry, we officially launched our new product Verifi3D: a state-of-the-art model checker for VDC professionals.

Check out AEC’s magazine Verifi3D review.

Aimed at bringing model checking to the next level, Verifi3D not only allows you to check your models real-time but also helps you be compliant with ISO19650 standards, as well as with local and project-specific requirements. Verifi3D aims to become a leader in the digitalization of the AEC industry, by automating time-consuming and mundane processes that are often carried out manually. The product already has its first customers, among which big names in the industry such as TakenakaBuroHappold Engineering and TBI.

What does Verifi3D bring to professionals’ workflow?

The idea came when Frank Schuyer, CEO of Xinaps, wanted to design a software capable of smoothly linking the final design stage with the pre-construction phase. These are the most crucial stages of a building process, as they ensure the safety and accuracy of building models, as well as their compliance with local rules and regulations. These phases include a variety of professionals in different spheres. The complexity of the projects and the number of parties involved can sometimes increase the risk of inaccuracies or inefficiencies, making effective communication and integrated workflow a must. The automation of tasks and the ability to access the latest version of the building model can mitigate risks and improve the work of professionals in the AEC industry.

As a product of countless hours of research and development, Verifi3D is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) that allows users to classify their building models data in real-time, visualize them in 3D and 2D, run customizable checks, and report issues. Combined with its cloud-based structure, the solution increases efficiency, decreases costs and mitigates the risks of inaccuracies and miscalculations.

The solution enhances the workflow of VDC professionals and ensures that building models are compliant with local rules and regulations. Verifi3D supports native Revit® and .IFC files and can be used for different checks, such as clash detection, egress path and parameter checks. It also allows users to create and save their own rulesets and reuse them for other future models, saving time and effort in the pre-construction stage.

Verifi3D is seamlessly integrated with collaboration platforms such as Autodesk BIM 360. It also features a dashboard, which provides an overview of all projects, as well as specific details about each individual project. The dashboard also provides real-time updates about each model, making sure that each team member gets the latest version.

The solution supports issue tracking based on BCF format. It allows users to create screenshots of issues, assign them to team members and export issue reports in different formats, such as .PDF or .CSV.

Altogether, the AEC industry is a very complex environment. The increasing number of professionals, data and project complexity has to be balanced by the advancements of digital tools such as Verifi3D. The set of features Verifi3D includes makes it a versatile, easy to use, all-in-one platform that can be used by different team members in all steps of the pre-construction stage of the building process.
